Scrolling through my news feed this morning I was thrilled to learn of a new posthumous novel by Robert A. Heinlein. According to my sources, The Pursuit of the Pankera is a parallel novel to Heinlein’s The Number of the Beast published in 1980. My well-worn copy is this post’s photo.
Apparently the first third of Pankera and Beast are the same, but at the point where the protagonists board the Gay Deceiver, a vehicle (spaceship…?, car…?) with some unique features, and travel to a parallel universe, each book transports them to a different parallel world and hence a different plot line.
In 1980 back when I was a zit-faced teenager, the sex scenes and random boob references in Beast drove me into a nerdy hormonal frenzy. Heinlein gets right down to it on page one: “Is that cantilevering natural? Or is there an invisible bra, you being in fact the sole support of two dependents?” Whoa! Fortunately, my mother rarely checked up on what I was reading.
As a Heinlein completest I will, of course, order a copy at my local bookstore as soon as the corona ban lifts. What are you reading in lockdown? Leave a comment.
