Thinking about all that corn yesterday got me pondering another really big number.

In an earlier post we noted that 3,7% of all CO2 emissions are caused by on-line video streaming (BTW a pre-corona statistic). We also mentioned that 27% of that streaming is porn and that this would be a topic for a future post. This is that post! Today we will try and understand just how much C02 that is.

Global C02 emissions are about 36 billion tons annually. So, video streaming contributes 1.332.000.000 tons, and 359.640.000 tons of that can be attributed to porn. That is a big number, but hard to comprehend. Perhaps some (non-pornographic) imagery can help.

20 yards of New York subway track weighs 1 ton, so… 6.577.096 kilometers of track. The moon is only 384.000 kilometers away.

Let’s put it in money. If you had a 359.640.000 tons of pennies you would have $ 1.306.212.480.000 (1.3 trillion). If you spent one dollar per second it would take you over 41.000 years to spend your money.

Other things that weigh a ton: the 1979 VW Beetle and the Liberty Bell.

Any other ways to fathom 359.640.000 tons? Leave a comment.
