We are all so proud in Austria that Donald Trump has praised us for our excellent forestry management skills. If you missed the interview with Fox News, Mr. Trump explained that as a “forest nation” we live in “forest cities.” Also, although we have “more explosive trees” than in California we don’t have forest fires because we “thin the fuel” lying on the ground.
Surprisingly, mainstream media sources have labeled these statements “bizarre claims.” As much as I disapprove of most of Donald Trump’s odd musings, in this case he is not far from the truth! Allow me to provide a quick fact check and show you how we live in harmony with the trees. Maybe it will motivate you to visit our beautiful county.
Mr. Trump’s claim that we all live in forest cities is only partially accurate. Heading this post is a picture of a traditional Austrian house. Whenever possible we actually build our living spaces inside trees, creating a symbiotic and nurturing relationship with the living organism giving us shelter. Many of us have the good fortune to still live in such traditional structures but a large number of our citizens now live in urban environments. For example roughly 22% of the population lives in Vienna – our nation’s capital – which is a modern city.
However, even here we still try and remain rooted to our woodsy heritage. Our Federal Chancellor for example lives in the Tree House a structure with both administrative offices and private living quarters similar to the White House. Below is a photo of our current Chancellor, Sebastian Kurz giving, a motivating speech from the East Balcony of the Tree House. We all love his speeches, especially when he talks about arborous virtues.
Mr. Trump was certainly correct to warn of exploding trees. While spontaneous tree combustion is a rare occurrence it does happen. We even had a narrow escape ourselves last spring when a freshly planted bush blew up for no reason. Fortunately, no one was hurt.
One thing we were incredibly sad about is that Mr. Trump didn’t mention our wonderful dairy industry, something else we are extremely proud of. Our milk and cheese taste so good because we graze our cows in the woods.
I hope I have set the record straight and that you will visit our wonderful country!
